When I go out to measure, the bathroom remodel is usually still in progress. Tile setters are working. An electrician might be pulling wire. The threshold area isn’t finalized. That’s normal — and it’s fine, because the measurement is a planning step, not the install itself.

By the time we come back for the installation, three to four weeks later, that same bathroom looks completely different. The construction materials are gone. The grout is done. The space is clean. That gap between measurement and install isn’t dead time — it’s when the glass is fabricated. Tempered glass is cut and processed to order, and it cannot be rushed. Every dimension I capture at the measurement appointment feeds directly into how that lite is cut.

This is also why accurate field measuring matters so much. A tempered lite cannot be trimmed on site. What’s ordered is what gets installed.

Substrate and Plumb: What I Check Before Any Hardware Goes In

Before I touch a drill, I check the walls. Specifically, I’m checking for plumb — whether the walls are truly vertical — and I’m checking the substrate for solid backing.

Here’s why that matters:

  • Pivot hardware relies on the wall being plumb. If the mounting surface is off, the pivot point is off, and the door won’t hang true.
  • A U-channel mounted to a wall that’s out of plumb will create uneven gaps along the glass edge — gaps that grow over time as the door is used.
  • Hollow or soft substrate behind tile means anchors won’t hold. Hardware that pulls loose a year after install is almost always a substrate problem, not a hardware problem.
  • The header bar, if the design calls for one, has to be level independent of what the ceiling is doing — and ceilings are rarely perfectly level.

Identifying these conditions during the measurement visit means we can account for them before the glass is ever cut. Discovering them on install day, with a finished bathroom around you, is a much harder problem to solve.

Working Clean in a Finished Space

This is the part that separates a careful installer from a fast one. On install day, every surface in that bathroom is finished. Tile that took a crew days to set is right next to where I’m drilling. Grout lines run directly through my work area. The threshold — where the bottom of the enclosure meets the floor — is polished tile or stone that scratches easily.

Working in a finished bathroom means:

  • Masking and protecting tile surfaces before any cutting or drilling starts
  • Using the right bit for the substrate — tile, cement board, and drywall each require different approaches
  • Controlling dust so it doesn’t settle into a freshly cleaned grout joint
  • Setting hardware without overtorquing anchors, which can crack tile from behind

None of this is complicated. But it requires attention that a rushed install doesn’t allow for. The bathroom was just remodeled. The homeowner doesn’t want to repaint or re-grout because an installer was careless with a tool.

Glass Thickness and Why It Affects the Whole Install

Most of the frameless enclosures I install use either 3/8″ or 1/2″ tempered glass. The choice affects more than just the weight of the door.

Thicker glass requires heavier-duty pivot hardware and deeper U-channel. The anchor loads are higher, which puts more demand on the substrate. A 1/2″ tempered lite on a poorly anchored pivot will stress the mounting point every time the door opens. Over time, that stress shows up as wobble, then as hardware failure.

Glass thickness also affects how the door feels in use. A 1/2″ lite has almost no flex — it swings like a slab. That’s satisfying when the hardware is set correctly. It’s also unforgiving when it isn’t. There’s no give to hide a pivot that’s slightly off.

I always match hardware spec to glass weight, not the other way around. Undersizing hardware to save cost on a heavy lite is a shortcut that comes back around.
