# Can You Use Windex, Magic Erasers or Bleach on Shower Glass?

By the [IDEAL install crew](https://idealshowerdoors.com/) · Frameless glass showers in Massachusetts and New Hampshire since 2014 · Updated 10-26-2026

Most household cleaners will get shower glass clean once. The problem is what they do over time: streaks, fine scratches, worn coatings and damaged seals. Here's what each one does and what we use instead.

## What's safe on shower glass

| Cleaner | Safe on shower glass? | Why |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Ammonia glass cleaner (like Windex) | Not recommended | Streaks in a humid shower and can wear down protective coatings. It doesn't lift hard water spots. |
| Magic eraser (melamine foam) | No | It's a fine abrasive. It can leave micro-scratches and strip a protective coating. |
| Bleach | No | Hard on vinyl seals, metal finishes and grout; doesn't remove spots or scum. |
| Scouring powder, steel wool | No | Scratches glass and dulls hardware. |
| Vinegar, lemon, other acids | No | We don't use or recommend acidic cleaners on shower glass, hardware or seals. |
| Soapless glass conditioner (like IDEAL Conditioner) | Yes | Cleans and polishes in one pass and leaves a water-repellent shine. |

## What we use instead

- **Weekly:** [IDEAL Conditioner](https://idealshowerdoors.com/store/p/ideal-conditioner). Spray on dry glass, wipe in with a [microfiber cloth](https://idealshowerdoors.com/store/p/mfw12), buff clear. Safe on glass, mirrors, stone, stainless and fiberglass (not floors).
- **When it's cloudy:** the [IDEAL Bath Kit](https://idealshowerdoors.com/store/p/ideal-bath-kit). Restore lifts hard water spots and haze, TopCoat seals the glass, Conditioner buffs it clear.
- **Daily:** a [squeegee](https://idealshowerdoors.com/store/p/ccs1) after showers.

## Common questions

**Can I use Windex on my glass shower door?**

It's not what we recommend. Ammonia cleaners streak in a humid shower, can wear down coatings and don't remove hard water spots.

**Will a magic eraser scratch shower glass?**

It can. Melamine foam is a fine abrasive, and it can also strip a protective coating.

**Is bleach safe on shower doors?**

We don't recommend it. It's hard on vinyl seals and metal finishes and doesn't remove spots or soap scum.
