# How to Care for a New Glass Shower Door: The First 30 Days

By the [IDEAL install crew](https://idealshowerdoors.com/) · Frameless glass showers in Massachusetts and New Hampshire since 2014 · Updated 10-26-2026

A new glass shower door is the easiest it will ever be to keep clear. The habits you start in the first month decide whether it still looks new in five years or turns cloudy in one.

## Week by week

| When | What to do |
| --- | --- |
| First 24 hours | Don't shower. Let the silicone cure, and leave the door open so the enclosure airs out. |
| Days 1–7 | Start the [squeegee](https://idealshowerdoors.com/store/p/ccs1) habit after every shower. Leave the door open or run the bath fan afterward. |
| End of week 1 | Seal the glass while it's still clean: TopCoat in the [IDEAL Bath Kit](https://idealshowerdoors.com/store/p/ideal-bath-kit) puts a water-repellent coating on it. |
| Every week after | Spray and buff the glass and hardware with [IDEAL Conditioner](https://idealshowerdoors.com/store/p/ideal-conditioner). |
| Day 30 | Look at the bottom third of the glass in good light. Any white spots? Catch them now, before they bond. |

## What to avoid on new glass

- **Acidic cleaners.** We don't use or recommend vinegar, lemon or other acidic cleaners on shower glass, hardware or seals.
- **Abrasives, magic erasers and [razor blades](https://idealshowerdoors.com/store/p/51s).** They can scratch the glass and wear off a coating.
- **Hanging things on the door.** Towel hooks over the glass and suction-cup caddies put stress on hinges and seals.
- **Pulling on the seals.** Sweeps and seals pressure fit onto the glass; tugging them loosens them.

## Why seal it early

Hard water spots form from day one. Sealing the glass while it's spotless means the coating protects clear glass instead of locking in early spots. See [is shower glass coating worth it](https://idealshowerdoors.com/store/guide/is-shower-glass-coating-worth-it).
