# Shower Door Sweep vs. Drip Rail: What's the Difference?

By the [IDEAL install crew](https://idealshowerdoors.com/) · Frameless glass showers in Massachusetts and New Hampshire since 2014 · Updated 10-15-2026

They do two different jobs at the bottom of the door, and the most popular frameless bottom seals combine both in one piece.

## The sweep

A sweep (or wipe) is the soft fin that runs along the curb and closes the gap under the door, so water can't run out underneath.

## The drip rail

A drip rail is a rigid lip that catches water running down the glass and drops it back into the shower instead of letting it run off the bottom edge and out.

## Why most frameless doors use both

A bottom wipe with drip rail, like [CRL P990WS](https://idealshowerdoors.com/store/p/p990ws) (3/8" glass) or [CRL P912WS](https://idealshowerdoors.com/store/p/p912ws) (1/2" glass), does both jobs in one piece. For doors with a tighter gap or where a drip rail would hit the curb, a sweep-style seal like [CRL P880WS](https://idealshowerdoors.com/store/p/p880ws) or a one-piece bottom rail like [CRL P501BR](https://idealshowerdoors.com/store/p/p501br) may fit better.

## Help the drip rail with the glass

A drip rail can only catch the water that runs down to it. On spotted, untreated glass, more water clings and dries in place. Glass sealed with a water-repellent coating sheds water faster, so more of it runs down into the shower. ## Common questions

**What is the difference between a shower door sweep and a drip rail?**

A sweep closes the gap under the door; a drip rail sheds water running down the glass back into the shower. Many bottom seals combine both.

**Do I need a drip rail on my shower door?**

If water runs down the glass and drips out under the door, yes. A [bottom wipe](https://idealshowerdoors.com/store/c/bottom) with drip rail handles both the gap and the runoff.
