# Shower Door Seal Turned Yellow or Moldy: Clean It or Replace It?

By the [IDEAL install crew](https://idealshowerdoors.com/) · Frameless glass showers in Massachusetts and New Hampshire since 2014 · Updated 10-26-2026

A clear seal on a shower that's taken care of stays clear. Yellowing and mold come from harsh cleaners, soap left sitting on the seal and a bathroom that never dries out. Surface mildew usually cleans off; a seal that has already yellowed or stiffened should be replaced.

## Clean it or replace it?

| What you see | What it means | What to do |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Dark spots that wipe off | Surface mildew | Clean it (below) |
| Black spots that won't wipe off | Mold grown into the vinyl | Replace |
| Yellow or brown color | Harsh cleaners or a shower that stays wet have broken down the vinyl | Replace |
| Stiff, cracked or curled fin | The seal no longer seals | Replace |
| Water on the floor | Seal is worn or the wrong size | Replace (see [leaking at the bottom](https://idealshowerdoors.com/store/guide/shower-door-leaking-at-bottom)) |

## How to clean a seal

1. Mist [IDEAL Conditioner](https://idealshowerdoors.com/store/p/ideal-conditioner) on a soft cloth and wipe the seal, getting into the folds of the fin.
2. Rinse and dry it, then leave the door open so the seal dries out fully.
3. Don't scrub with abrasives or use bleach or acidic cleaners; they stiffen vinyl and make it yellow faster.

## How to replace it

Pull the old seal off, clean the glass edge (see [how to remove an old shower door seal and leftover tape](https://idealshowerdoors.com/store/guide/how-to-remove-old-shower-door-seal)), and pressure fit a new one made for your [glass thickness](https://idealshowerdoors.com/store/measure). Not sure which one? The [Seal Finder](https://idealshowerdoors.com/store/finder) shows the seal for the spot you point to.

## How to make the new one last

[Squeegee](https://idealshowerdoors.com/store/p/ccs1) the glass and seals after showers, keep the bathroom ventilated, and stick to gentle, soapless cleaners. More in [how long do shower door seals last](https://idealshowerdoors.com/store/guide/how-long-do-shower-door-seals-last).

## Common questions

**Why did my clear shower door seal turn yellow?**

Most clear seals stay clear when the shower is cared for. Yellowing usually comes from harsh or acidic cleaners, bleach, or a shower that never dries out. Once it's yellow, cleaning won't bring back the clear color, so replace it and keep the new one clean with a gentle, soapless cleaner.

**Can I clean mold off a shower door seal?**

Surface mildew often wipes off. If black spots stay after cleaning, the mold is in the vinyl and the seal should be replaced.

**Should I use bleach on shower door seals?**

We don't recommend it. Bleach stiffens vinyl and can make it yellow faster.
