IDEAL Shower Doors

Custom Shower Glass

The image is nearly blank, with a very faint, barely visible outline of a geometric shape—resembling a cube or open shower doors—subtly etched on a white background.

Built to Your Opening, Not Off a Shelf

Walls lean, curbs slope, and a quarter inch changes what the glass has to do. We fabricate every panel to measurements taken in your home, so the enclosure fits the opening you actually have. A simple door and panel or a five-sided enclosure around a bench, it is cut to your room.

What Goes Into a Custom Shower Enclosure

Frameless glass shows off your tile and lets light move through the room. With less metal framing, there are fewer places for soap scum to collect. It is also the fastest way to change how a bathroom reads, because it reshapes the space without touching the plumbing or the tile you already paid for. What follows is what actually goes into one: the glass itself, how thick it needs to be, the hardware that carries it, and how we get from a measurement to a finished enclosure.

Choose Your Glass

  • Clear: Standard tempered glass keeps the shower open and your tile visible. It disappears visually and makes a small bathroom feel larger, which is why it remains the most common choice.
  • Low-iron: IDEAL Crystal Clear reduces the green tint in standard glass. That green is iron, and it shows most at the panel edges and across large spans. It is usually why a finished shower looks slightly off against tile you spent weeks choosing. Compare both in our low-iron glass guide, or see them side by side at the Danvers showroom.
  • Privacy: Frosted glass diffuses light evenly across the panel and hides water marks between cleanings, while rain glass uses texture to soften visibility and stays brighter than frosted. Privacy matters most when the shower sits in the sightline of a doorway, a window or a shared vanity. Explore frosted vs. rain glass.

Glass Thickness & Layout

In a framed enclosure the frame carries the load, so thinner glass works. Remove the frame and the glass becomes the structure: it holds its own weight, carries the hinges and resists flex on every swing. Our frameless swing and hinged doors use 3/8-inch tempered glass. Panel size, support and hardware determine the specifications for your enclosure, and heavier glass calls for heavier hardware to carry it. Under-specify a panel and you feel it in the first week, as give in the swing and alignment that drifts.

Configuration decides as much as square footage. A single swinging door carries its load differently than a door-and-panel layout, a 90-degree corner or a neo-angle unit, where fixed panels share the work with the moving door. Sliding doors save swing space near tubs and vanities, so they suit a tub and shower combo where a swinging door would fight the vanity. Hinged doors suit walk-ins with room to open. See our glass thickness guide for more detail. All glass we install meets tempered safety glass standards, so it breaks into small blunt pieces rather than shards.

Hardware & Finishes

We use original C.R. Laurence hardware, with hinges sized to your door and matching finishes throughout. CRL hardware is solid brass plated to the finish you choose, so it will not rust or break down in shower humidity, and we do not substitute cheaper overseas alternatives.

Hinges are sized by weight: glass thickness, width and height set the load, and the load sets the hinge, in wall-mounted, 180-degree and 90-degree configurations. Clamps and mitered corner sleeve-over clamps hold the fixed panels in place. Choose handles or knobs in chrome, brushed nickel or matte black, including ladder pulls, C-pulls, square and round tubing pulls and through-glass round pulls. We keep the finish consistent
