Daily Shower Spray vs. Squeegee: Which Keeps Glass Cleaner?

A squeegee is the better daily habit, because it removes the water itself before the minerals in it dry into spots. A spray-and-buff product does a different job: it cleans and leaves a water-repellent shine that helps protect the glass. Both help, and the clearest glass gets both.

What a squeegee does

Hard water spots form when drops dry and leave their minerals behind. A squeegee pulls most of that water off the glass while it is still wet, so there is far less left to dry. It is fast, it uses no product, and it works on any glass. Its limits: it doesn't clean anything already stuck to the glass, and it misses a little water at edges, corners and hardware.

What a spray does

Sprays vary. Some daily shower sprays are misted on and left to drip off; on their own they don't remove the water, so in hard-water homes spots can still form as it dries. A spray-and-buff product like IDEAL Conditioner works differently: you mist it on dry glass, wipe it in and buff it. It cleans and polishes in one pass and leaves a water-repellent, streak-free shine, so water beads and runs off and the squeegee has less to do.

Side by side

If you only do one

Pick the squeegee for daily use. Water drying on the glass is what causes hard water spots, and nothing removes it faster. Then make the weekly spray-and-buff your second habit: glass with a water-repellent shine sheds more water on its own, so the squeegee pass gets quicker and easier, and the glass looks clearer between cleanings. If your water is soft and your glass is already sealed, a weekly spray-and-buff with an occasional squeegee may be all you need.

The routine we recommend

  1. Daily. Squeegee the glass after showering, top to bottom, then leave the door open or run the fan.
  2. Weekly. Spray and buff the dry glass with IDEAL Conditioner and a microfiber cloth.
  3. When it's already cloudy. Restore and seal the glass first; neither a squeegee nor a spray will lift built-up mineral haze. See how to remove hard water spots.

What we use

For the daily pass, the CRL Crystal Clear Shower Squeegee. For the weekly spray-and-buff, the IDEAL Conditioner 2-Pack, soapless and eco-safe, one bottle for the shower and one for mirrors or the kitchen. If the glass is already spotted, start with the IDEAL Bath Kit (Restore, TopCoat, Conditioner). All of it is on our Glass Care page. For the full routine, see how to keep glass shower doors clean.

Common questions

Is it better to squeegee or spray a shower door?

Both help, in different ways. A squeegee removes the water so fewer spots form; a spray-and-buff product like IDEAL Conditioner cleans and leaves a water-repellent shine. Squeegee daily and spray-and-buff weekly.

Do daily shower sprays prevent hard water spots?

A spray that is left to drip off doesn't remove the water, so in hard-water homes spots can still form. Squeegeeing removes the water itself.

Should I squeegee my shower glass every day?

Yes, if you can. It is the quickest way to keep minerals from drying onto the glass.

Will a squeegee remove hard water stains?

No. A squeegee prevents new spots but can't lift spots that have already dried on. Those need a hard-water remover like IDEAL Restore in the IDEAL Bath Kit.
