How to Keep Glass Shower Doors Clean

The easiest way to keep glass shower doors clean is to start with clear, sealed glass, squeegee the water off after showers, and give the glass a quick spray-and-buff once a week. Spots and scum come from water drying on the glass, so the less water that dries there, the less there is to clean.

Why glass shower doors get dirty so fast

Two things build up on shower glass. Hard water leaves mineral deposits (calcium and magnesium) when drops dry, and soap scum forms when soap mixes with body oils and sticks to the glass. Both start with water sitting on the surface, so the whole routine is about getting water off and making it harder for anything to stick.

A simple routine that works

  1. After every shower: squeegee. Pull a squeegee down the glass from top to bottom while it is still wet. It takes well under a minute and removes the water before the minerals in it can dry into spots.
  2. Let it breathe. Leave the door open or run the bath fan so the glass, seals and corners dry out.
  3. Once a week: spray and buff. Mist IDEAL Conditioner on the dry glass, wipe it in with a microfiber cloth and buff until it is clear. It cleans and polishes in one pass and leaves a water-repellent, streak-free shine.
  4. When it gets cloudy: restore and seal. If spots or haze have built up anyway, a weekly wipe won't clear them. Restore the glass with a hard-water remover, then seal it again.

Start with sealed glass

A routine is much easier on glass that has a water-repellent protective coating. Water beads up and runs off instead of sheeting and drying in place, so the squeegee works faster and the weekly wipe stays quick. If your glass is already spotted, clean it first: a coating seals in whatever is on the glass when it goes on. Not sure it's worth it? See is shower glass coating worth it.
