Is Shower Glass Coating Worth It?

For most homes, yes: a water-repellent coating makes water bead up and roll off the glass, so fewer hard-water spots form and cleaning goes faster. It is most worth it if you have hard water, and it only works as well as the glass underneath it is clean.

What a shower glass coating does

Glass looks smooth, but up close it has tiny pores and peaks where minerals and soap scum can grip. A protective coating fills and smooths that surface and makes it water-repellent. Instead of sheeting across the glass and drying in place, water forms beads that run off. Less water left behind means fewer mineral spots, and grime has a harder time sticking.

What a coating won't do

How to coat shower glass at home

  1. Restore. Remove hard-water spots, haze and soap scum so the glass is truly clean. See how to remove hard water spots.
  2. Seal. Apply the protective coating in two thin coats, following the directions.
  3. Maintain. Squeegee after showers and buff the glass weekly with a conditioning spray to refresh the shine and keep water beading.

Does new glass need a coating?

Some shower glass comes with a factory coating and some doesn't. Either way, the upkeep is the same: avoid abrasives and ammonia-based cleaners, which can wear coatings down, and keep up a weekly wipe. On uncoated glass, sealing it early, before hard water has a chance to build up, is the easiest time to do it. If your new glass already looks hazy, read why new shower glass looks cloudy.

What we use

The IDEAL Bath Kit is the full at-home version of this: Restore lifts water spots and haze, TopCoat seals the glass with a water-repellent protective coating in two thin coats, and Conditioner buffs it and keeps it up. One kit treats up to 150 sq ft. For ongoing upkeep, the IDEAL Conditioner 2-Pack refreshes the shine weekly. See both on our Glass Care page.

Common questions

Is a shower glass protective coating worth the money?

For most homes, especially with hard water, yes. Water beads and rolls off coated glass, so fewer spots form and cleaning is quicker. It still needs simple upkeep.

Can you coat old shower glass?

Yes, once it is clean. Remove hard-water spots and soap scum first, because a coating seals in whatever is on the glass. The IDEAL Bath Kit does both: Restore first, then TopCoat.

Do I still need to clean coated shower glass?

Yes, but less. Squeegee after showers and give it a weekly spray-and-buff with a product like IDEAL Conditioner to refresh the shine.

Will a coating fix etched shower glass?

No. Etching is damage to the glass surface itself. A coating can help keep it from getting worse, but it can't make etched glass look new.
